Mapuche activists end hunger strike in Chile (AP)

SANTIAGO, Chile – Four imprisoned Mapuche Indian activists have given up a hunger strike they began 86 days ago to protest their prosecutions under Chile's tough anti-terrorism law.

Their spokeswoman says the activists made the decision Thursday at a hospital in the central Chilean city of Victoria.

They were sentenced in March under dictatorship-era guidelines to prison terms of between eight and 15 years for robbery and for attacking three police officers and a prosecutor in 2008. The activists demand the return of the Mapuches' ancestral lands and say the government handed them overly harsh sentences.

Last week, Chile's Supreme Court reduced the activists' convictions from attempted murder to assault but added robbery.
